Understanding the Septic Inspection Process

Most of a septic system is hidden underground and standard visual check is not enough to determine its true condition.

DiMeglio Septic Inc conducts specialized inspections using NJDEP-compliant methods to evaluate all septic system components and the soil, providing a factual baseline for your system’s performance.

Most inspections are used for a home sale because banks and buyers need to know the system is working properly. It is a standard part of the closing process that gives the buyer a clear picture of the system’s health and provides the seller with the required paperwork for a smooth property transfer.

How it works

We evaluate the system by looking at all components and how it filters waste. On average, a septic inspection on site takes approximately 2 hours.

• Internal Pipe Inspection: We use fiber optic cameras to inspect the interior of all pipes. This identifies structural issues—like cracks, collapses, or root blockages—that would otherwise remain hidden until a backup occurs.
• Distribution Box Evaluation: We uncover and inspect the distribution box, “D-Box,” to ensure it is level and structurally watertight. Proper leveling is critical. It ensures that wastewater is distributed equally across the drain field rather than saturating one specific area.
• Hydraulic Load Testing: By introducing non-toxic tracing dye and a controlled volume of water, we simulate typical household usage. This allows us to verify that the absorption field is currently processing liquid at an appropriate rate.
• Soil and Surface Analysis: We probe the disposal area with a long, thin, T-handled steel rod, pushing it manually into the earth throughout your drain field. We look for saturated soil or surfacing (water rising to the top,) which are primary indicators that a drain field is reaching the end of its functional life.

Report and Turnaround Times

The final report is a critical part of the process, especially during a real estate transaction when deadlines are tight.

• Comprehensive Documentation: Our reports are typically 5 to 6 pages long. They include high-resolution photos from our camera inspections, a map of the system components, and a clear breakdown of the condition of each part of the system.
• Turnaround Time: We understand that time is of the essence. You will receive your completed digital report within 3 to 5 business days of the on-site inspection.
• Compliance: Every document is formatted to meet all current NJDEP standards, ensuring it is ready for immediate review by attorneys, lenders, or municipal health departments. All reports are submitted to the local health department.
